"Actually" Doesn't Mean "Actualmente"

English

This is one of the most common false friends for Spanish speakers, and it trips up even advanced learners. ACTUALLY means "in fact" or "in reality" — you use it to correct something or add a surprising detail: "I thought she was from Spain, but actually she's from Argentina."

If you want to say "actualmente" (right now, currently), the English word is CURRENTLY: "I'm currently living in Dublin." Mixing these up is one of the easiest ways to accidentally confuse a native speaker — so it's worth drilling this pair until it's automatic.

ACTUALLY significa "de hecho" o "en realidad" — se usa para corregir algo o añadir un detalle sorprendente: "I thought she was from Spain, but actually she's from Argentina."
