3 Words That Instantly Sound More Formal

English

In exam writing (IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL) and formal emails, swapping a few everyday words for their more formal equivalents raises the level of your English immediately — examiners notice.

GET → OBTAIN ("obtain a qualification" instead of "get a qualification"). BUT → HOWEVER (start a new sentence with "However," instead of joining with "but" mid-sentence). A LOT OF → SIGNIFICANT / CONSIDERABLE ("a significant increase" instead of "a lot of increase"). Use these three swaps in your next practice essay and you'll immediately sound more polished — just don't overdo it, one or two per paragraph is plenty.

Explicación en español

En redacciones de examen (IELTS, Cambridge, TOEFL) y correos formales, cambiar algunas palabras cotidianas por sus equivalentes más formales sube el nivel de tu inglés al instante — los examinadores lo notan.

GET → OBTAIN ("obtain a qualification" en vez de "get a qualification"). BUT → HOWEVER (empieza una nueva oración con "However," en vez de unir con "but" a mitad de frase). A LOT OF → SIGNIFICANT / CONSIDERABLE ("a significant increase" en vez de "a lot of increase"). Usa estos tres cambios en tu próximo ensayo de práctica y sonarás más pulido de inmediato — eso sí, no te pases, uno o dos por párrafo es suficiente.
